Storms down trees, power lines in state

? Central Kansas was slammed by powerful storms that uprooted trees, damaged buildings and left thousands of customers without power.

The Kansas Division of Emergency Management said wind speeds were reported up to 100 mph Monday and that as many as 12,000 customers lost power at the peak of the storm.

In Salina, a steeple was blown over on a church roof and plunged several feet through the roof of the sanctuary.

Dean Speaks, the interim director of Saline County emergency management, said that no injuries were reported, but several homes were flooded.

The violent weather moved into the Salina area about 10:45 a.m. with hail and heavy rain. The storm lasted about an hour.

Scattered property damage was also reported in Coffey, Franklin, Morris and Osage counties.
