House south of Lawrence catches fire, possibly from lightning

A house south of Lawrence at 1305 North 1082 Road caught fire early Monday morning.

The call came in about 1:44 a.m. Police, medical and fire crews were on scene shortly thereafter.

Multiple fire crews responded to the call and began extinguishing the flames, covering the house from several angles.

The fire went through the house, causing extensive damage.

The residents of the home escaped the building without injury.

Two cats who had originally been unaccounted for in the fire were later found alive, said Wakarusa Township Fire Chief Chris Moore.

Moore said that the fire was likely caused by lightning, but an official cause could not yet be determined.

Moore did not have a monetary estimate of the damage to the house, but said that “in all likelihood, it’s going to be totaled.”

A representative from the Douglas County chapter of the American Red Cross said that the agency was assisting the occupants of the home.
