Poet’s Showcase: ‘White Egrets’

‘covered the Wetlands like snow,

like snow,

before white feathers in hats

became high fashion for women,

and egret feathers were worth more

than gold.

A few white egrets return each year,

ghosts that whisper,

Kill us

and you kill yourselves.

No one’s listening.
