Rachel McBride and Jason McBride, Kansas City, Mo., announce the birth of their son, Robert Jack McBride, born July 14, 2009, at North Kansas City Hospital, in Kansas City, Mo.

His maternal grandparents are Daniel and Yolanda Quintero, Kansas City, Mo.; and paternal grandparents are Mike and Marilyn McBride, Lawrence.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln, announces its dean’s list for the 2009 spring semester. The minimum grade-point requirement for the honor roll varies by school from 3.5 to 3.75. Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa, announces students named to the dean’s list for the 2009 spring semester.

“Highest honors” are granted to students with 4.0 averages; “high honors” are awarded to students with 3.8 to 3.99 averages; and “honors” include grade-point averages of 3.6 to 3.79.

Lawrence students are: Emily Edwards, junior, honors; Joanna Loewen, senior, highest honors; and Yuri Mitchell, senior, highest honors.

Kansas University hosted a state recognition program June 7 at the Lied Center for more than 300 of the more than 900 academically talented seventh-grade students selected for the 2009 Duke University Talent Identification Program. The students represent 128 Kansas cities in 61 counties.

Selection to Duke TIP is based on college entrance exam scores that are in the top 5 percent while the students are in middle school. Students take either the SAT or ACT national achievement tests.

The Duke program is in its 29th year, and this is the 11th year KU has hosted the Kansas recognition program. Area students are:

Four new staff members are joining Bishop Seabury Academy. They are: Rose Emergo, who holds a doctorate in physics from Kansas University and will teach math and science; Sonya English, who holds a bachelor’s degree from KU in journalism and will teach journalism; Jacquelyn Krueger-Stineman, who has a background in sales and marketing and will be director of admissions; and Margie Lawrence, who holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from California State University-Fullerton and will be director of development and teach music.


Sierra Smith, 10, daughter of Kiyane Tucker and Courtee Smith of Lawrence, will participate in the Nationals’ 2009 Miss Pre-Teen Kansas City pageant competition today.

Smith will compete in the Miss Jr. Pre-Teen division, one of four divisions for young ladies between the ages of 7 and 19, who compete in modeling routines which include casual and formal wear.

The winner of the Miss Jr. Pre-Teen Kansas City competition will represent Kansas City and the surrounding communities at the Cities of America National Competition in Orlando, Fla. More than $60,000 in prizes and awards will be presented at the national competition while each winner enjoys the expense-paid trip of five nights and six days in Orlando.


Sara Fevurly, Lawrence, has been named the recipient of the 2009-10 Oklahoma Press Association Freshman Endowment Scholarship to attend the School of Journalism and Broadcasting at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater. Twenty-eight students received scholarships totaling more than $55,000.


Hunter Samuels, son of Gene and Merri Samuels, Tonganoxie, was named to the dean’s list for the 2009 spring semester at Dana College, Blair, Neb., by earning a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher.

Samuels is a recent graduate who majored in business administration and corporate communication. He is a 2005 graduate of Tonganoxie High School.
