Packers GM won’t
rule out Vick
Green Bay, Wis. — The Packers aren’t ruling out Michael Vick.
Asked whether Green Bay might be interested in the scandal-tainted quarterback, general manager Ted Thompson didn’t rule it out Tuesday.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean the Packers are in hot pursuit of Vick. Thompson is notoriously coy about the team’s plans, so it wasn’t immediately clear whether his comments indicated a sincere and significant level of interest.
“What is the answer that we give to questions like this? We’re always looking to improve our team,” Thompson said. “We look at all options at all times. I wouldn’t care to speculate in terms of the odds or the percentages (of signing Vick) or anything like that.”
More than two dozen NFL teams have said they’re not interested in signing the 29-year-old Vick. The others have declined comment or taken a stance like that of the Packers.
Ravens’ Terry on IR
Westminster, Md. — Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Adam Terry will be placed on injured reserve due to chronic problems with his right knee that will require further surgery. The former second-round draft pick had arthroscopic knee surgery during the offseason and hadn’t been practicing at training camp after being placed on the physically unable to perform list.
Pierce: No regrets
in Burress case
Albany, N.Y. — Seeing a bloody Plaxico Burress with a bullet wound in his leg in a Manhattan nightclub last November, New York Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce reacted instinctively.
He helped his teammate.
Pierce got Burress into a car, drove him to a hospital and then took the gun that Burress used in accidentally shooting himself back to his home in New Jersey, later arranging to get it back to the wounded wide receiver’s home.
Speaking a day after a grand jury decided not to indict him on charges of carrying Burress’ unlicensed firearm in the aftermath of the shooting, Pierce said Tuesday he acted reasonably, responsibly and instinctively in aiding his now former teammate.
Pierce, who had been silent about the shooting for the past nine months, declined to discuss any details of the incident in an interview that lasted a little more than three minutes at the Giants training camp at the University at Albany.
“I am not sorry for how I acted that night. I am not sorry for how I responded,” Pierce said of the Nov. 29 shooting at the Latin Quarter nightclub, about 36 hours before the Giants had a game against the Washington Redskins.
Browns’ Edwards out
Berea, Ohio — Carrying his cleats but still without pads or his orange helmet, Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards emerged from Cleveland’s locker room on Tuesday and slowly strolled onto the practice field, walking a few feet behind new coach Eric Mangini. Edwards then took a familiar turn: to the stationary bikes.
The wide receiver missed his fourth day of practice with an injury growing more mysterious with each passing day.
Mangini, who has refused to reveal the nature of Edwards’ injury or a timetable for his return, reiterated that Cleveland’s top playmaker will join his teammates for drills when he is medically cleared by the Browns’ training staff.
There have been reports that he hurt his ankle playing basketball.
Moss returns to Broncos
Englewood, Colo. — Denver Broncos pass-rusher Jarvis Moss has returned to camp after a three-day furlough to mull retirement. Moss, who missed five practices while deciding whether he still wanted to play pro football, returned to the team for its lone workout Tuesday.
Haynesworth back
Ashburn, Va. — Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth returned to practice Tuesday after missing two days for treatment on his left knee. Coach Jim Zorn said the knee issue wasn’t serious and should not affect Haynesworth’s ability to play a full 16-game schedule.
Two Texans injured
Houston — Houston Texans starting cornerback Jacques Reeves and starting center Chris Myers were injured in practice on Tuesday morning.
Reeves fractured his left leg in a collision with receiver Andre Davis when both were going for a pass in the end zone. Reeves, who signed as a free agent in 2008, is expected to be out 6-to-8 weeks.
Myers sustained a high ankle sprain and will be out indefinitely. Both players attended practice wearing walking boots in the afternoon.
Maclin eager to play
Bethlehem, Pa. — Now that he’s finally signed his contract, Jeremy Maclin hopes to show the Eagles that trading up to draft him was a smart move.
Maclin arrived at Eagles training camp Tuesday a day after agreeing to a five-year deal. The Eagles traded up two spots to select the speedy wide receiver from Missouri at 19th overall in this year’s NFL Draft.
“I’m a competitive guy, so I wanted to be out here competing and be out here with my teammates,” Maclin said.
Pats sign QB Walter
Foxborough, Mass. — The New England Patriots have signed quarterback Andrew Walter and released quarterback Matt Gutierrez.
The 6-foot-6, 230-pound Walter has spent the last four seasons with Oakland after being selected by the Raiders in the third round of the 2005 draft out of Arizona State.
