During a May 16 hooding ceremony and senior recognition and awards program, the School of Pharmacy at Kansas University honored graduates, two faculty members and three Kansas pharmacists.

Ken Audus, dean of the School of Pharmacy, presided as 114 students were hooded in recognition of their completion of doctor of pharmacy degrees.

Awards were presented to graduates who had distinguished themselves with outstanding academic performance and excellence in professional development and community service activities through their involvement in pharmacy-student organizations.

Lawrence graduates earning awards are: Paul Huffer, Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology George F. Traiger Award for academic excellence in toxicology courses; and Angela Valadez, Nontraditional PharmD Student Award in recognition of excellence in the nontraditional PharmD curriculum.


Rachel Wigen-Toccalino, daughter of Beth Wigen and John Toccalino of Lawrence, graduated magna cum laude May 15 with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Washington University in St. Louis.

Wigen-Toccalino, a 2005 graduate of Bishop Seabury Academy, was recognized for graduating Lambda Alpha, the anthropology honor society.


The Dole Institute of Politics at Kansas University has named 128 recipients of Sen. Robert J. Dole Public Service Scholarships. The recent Kansas high school graduates will each receive $1,000 for the 2009-2010 academic year.

The new scholars were invited to a June 24 luncheon at the Dole Institute, where they were formally introduced. The scholarship program recognizes graduating seniors who have volunteered in their communities and maintained a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. Renewable for up to three years, the scholarships require recipients to complete 100 hours of civic activity annually.

During the luncheon, the new scholars were greeted by Diana Carlin, professor of communications studies; Sue Hack, executive director of Leadership Lawrence and former Lawrence mayor; Barbara Ballard, director of the scholarship program and associate director of the Dole Institute; and Bill Lacy, director of the Dole Institute. Paul Buskirk, associate athletics director, was the keynote speaker.

Area scholarship recipients are: Bethany Schirmer, Berryton; Marian Mersmann, Eudora; Sierra Dickson, Gelareh Samandi, Arielle Spiridigliozzi, Sarah Stern and Stefanie Stuever, Lawrence; Ivey Bruton, Meriden; Keri Heston, Oskaloosa; and Chase McIver, Overbrook.


Marian Davis Wiseman, Lawrence, will celebrate her 80th birthday with a reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 8 at Wingert’s Barn, 693 E. 1250 Road (U.S. Highway 59), Lawrence.


Lawrence High School Class of 1967 is having a 60th birthday party Sept. 4-5. The class will meet Friday afternoon and attend a Lawrence High football game on Friday night. A dinner and dance is planned Saturday night.
