State says Kansas hog operations not being quarantined

? A state animal health official says contrary to rumors, swine operations in Kansas are not being quarantined because of swine flu.

Livestock commissioner George Teagarden also said Wednesday that the H1N1 virus has not be found in any swine in Kansas or the U.S.

Earlier Wednesday, Kansas State University swine experts said pork is safe to eat.

Dick Hesse, Kansas State’s director of diagnostic virology, said there’s no evidence the deadly flu strain is circulating in swine populations anywhere that would pose a threat to humans or other hogs.

Officials have confirmed two cases of the flu in people in Kansas, both in Dickinson County.
