Flyover of Manhattan sparks morning panic

April 28, 2009

— One of the president’s official planes and a supersonic fighter jet zoomed past the lower Manhattan skyline in a flash just as the work day was beginning Monday. Within minutes, startled financial workers streamed out of their offices, fearing a nightmarish replay of Sept. 11.

For a half-hour, the Boeing 747 and F-16 jet circled the Statue of Liberty and the lower Manhattan skyline near the World Trade Center site. Offices evacuated. Dispatchers were inundated with calls. Witnesses thought the planes were flying dangerously low.

But the flyover was nothing but a photo op, apparently one of a series of flights to get pictures of the president’s airliner in front of national landmarks.

It was carried out by the Defense Department with little warning, infuriating New York officials and putting the White House on the defense. Even Mayor Michael Bloomberg didn’t know about it, and he later called it “insensitive” to fly so near the site of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The director of the White House military office, Louis Caldera, took the blame a few hours later.

When told of the flight, President Barack Obama was furious, a White House official said on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations.

The country's in the very best of hands. This photo-op was probably for a political purpose.

Tons of CO2 dumped into the atmosphere? Check. Massive ego fed? Check. Thousands of Americans frightened? Check. You're doing a heck of a job, Barry.

But the flyover was nothing but a photo op

While most of us are just barely paying the bills, they need a photo-op.... That is just great

Oh, I'm having a very wonderful internet life.......

That was a bit of a blunder. Wonder who the moron was that thought this was a good idea? Seriously, who said, "Ya know what? Let's fly a jumbo jet real low around NYC and get some good pics."?

On a somewhat seperate not, I'm so tired of 'anonymous sources from the White House'. This is not a party specific situation, happens no matter who sits in the Oval, and it's nauseating every time:

"When told of the flight, President Barack Obama was furious, a White House official said on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations."

Soooo, some jackass can't keep his pie hole closed? OR some of the President's inner circle can't be trusted? OR this was an intentional 'leak' in order to buffer the President, to give the appearance he knew nothing about it ahead of time? Personally, I doubt President Obama was involved with something this idiotic, but who really knows?

"Americans are still reeling from the stupidity of yesterday's buzzing of lower Manhattan by the White House for its file photo update. The reaction is one of outrage and fury at the White House's insensitivity to those living in post 9/11 New York City. Peruse the Wall Street Journal's comment section at "Did You See the Low-Flying Jet Over Lower Manhattan" and you'll read comment after comment from people who were outraged at the fear and panic that the fly-by created. Sprinkled in the over 500 comments were reports of physical injuries as well: " http://wizbangblog.com/content/2009/04/28/outrage-after-the-white-houses-file-photo-flyby.php

At least Obama didn't land atop an aircraft carrier and get out of wearing a flight suit so he could stand in front of a banner that read "Mission Accomplished." Now THAT would be a photo op.

Some neocons have amazingly short memories.

Note to Defense department - next time save the gas and invest in Photoshop.

Was the Klingon on board making pressed ham as the plane flew over NYC?

Flap Doodle 5 years, 7 months ago

I thought I heard a shrill voice to starboard. It was saying " blah, blah, blah, neocon, blah, blah, Bush, blah, blah, blah". I hear the same thing every time Barry puts a foot wrong. I wonder if it'll ever shut up.

Yes, because everyone should immediately correlate the President standing on the deck of a ship to Air Force One buzzing Manhattan.

"Note to Defense department - next time save the gas and invest in Photoshop"

Been a long time since I agreed with beatrice on anything, but that statement is spot on.

Oops, where I said "starboard" above, read it as "port". It's been a confusing day.

No, but rather because failed Presidential photo ops are nothing new, and this one didn't even involve the President!

Snap, who is Barry? Certainly you aren't calling our President of the United States a familiar name that he hasn't gone by since his earliest days in college, are you?

At least the president standing on the deck of an aircraft carrier didn't cause mass building evacuations in a city of 20 million people.

As someone who had a personal stake in the Trade Center tragedy, bea, I assure you that there are many people who did not take this lightly. And in our shiny, happy, politically correct world, isn't sensitivity the buzz word? That offending someone even accidentally isn't acceptable, you should be sensitive to the feelings of those who might be hurt? This was a completely thoughtless and moronic act.

As is your laughing it off.

"Obama is not aware where his ride is,,, or told where it is. But, when it comes to a clandestine, obscure sniper going after a child pirate, Obama is all over it."

Obama has more than one "ride." Pretty sure there's more than one 'Air Force One' (well, actually, any plane the president is on becomes Air Force One, but I believe there's at least one backup plane just like the primary). And if the pres was in DC, it's a safe bet that the primary plane was close by, and that it was a backup used for the photo op. Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty far from an Obama fan, and I still think it was incredibly stupid, but I don't think we can pin this one on the president.

Figures it was another Clinton administration retread that was responsible, though. I'm glad Obama brought so much 'change' to the White House.

A couple of possibility present themselves. A. Barry was aware of this little stunt & hadn't a clue how people would react B. Barry didn't know, but the people he has placed in positions of responsibility who did okay this stunt hadn't a clue how people would react. Neither is encouraging. These jerks probably spent more on this photo op/fly over than we spend on our streets here in a year. They just don't get it. That expense would have been some very nice funding for our city or any city like ours. Take into account that they did this on borrowed money as well. The spending just won't stop. Just charge it to the American people. Do you have any idea how much it cost to fly Airforce 1? Yes, it's an insane amount of cash...way more than a 747 cost to fly to Europe...many times more.

VTHawk 5 years, 7 months ago

Cost of buzzing NYC: $325,000

Isn't it fabulous how Obama has reconciled with our enemies and put fear into the hearts of Americans? Does any image illustrate so neatly the wrongheadedness of the Obama administration than Americans scrambling in terror from Air Force One?
