Picks among speculation

Trade speculation is rampant as the NFL gears up for its annual draft this weekend. Teams are talking about trading picks, trading places and trading players.

But mostly, teams will trade phone calls, e-mails and text messages: as they have been doing all week.

Based on a few phone calls, e-mails and text messages of our own, this is how the first round looks to shake out.

1. Lions: Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia

Lions made this a done deal by reaching terms late Friday night.

2. Rams: Jason Smith, OT, Baylor

A trade-down is possible because Mark Sanchez has heated up so much the team that wants him might have to come up.

3. Chiefs: Tyson Jackson, DE, Louisiana State

The Chiefs want to move down, and if they are stuck here they don’t have a great option.

4. Seahawks: Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest

A trade down is possible, but Seahawks could live with Curry, as well as Eugene Monroe or Michael Crabtree.

5. Browns: Mark Sanchez, QB, Southern Cal

Either Browns trade Brady Quinn and take Sanchez here, or they trade down and another team takes Sanchez here.

6. Bengals: Andre Smith OT, Alabama

Bills could try to leapfrog Bengals to take Smith.

7. Raiders: Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland

Suckers for speed, Raiders they take Heyward-Bey over Jeremy Maclin.

8. Jaguars: B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College.

They could go receiver or quarterback, but are very active in trade-down talk.

9. Packers: Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia

Michael Oher possible, or a pass rusher such as Brian Orakpo.

10. 49ers: Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech

They will be lucky if Crabtree slips this far.

11. Bills: Michael Oher, OT, Mississippi

Need replacement for Jason Peters, but could be tempted by Orakpo.

12. Broncos: Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas

Could make Sanchez move or take CB Malcolm Jenkins.

13. Redskins: Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State

They really want Sanchez and could move up. If not, they could move down if Orakpo is off board.

14. Saints: Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State

Could be tempted by running back: either Knowshon Moreno or Beanie Wells.

15. Texans: Brian Cushing, OLB, Southern Cal

They hope Jenkins falls to them. Trading down an option.

16. Chargers: Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri

Maclin shouldn’t fall this far, but he would be good fit.

17. Jets: Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State

Could move up for Sanchez or Freeman. Also could move down for Percy Harvin.

18. Broncos: Beanie Wells, RB, Ohio State

Could go for LB here.

19. Bucs: Peria Jerry, DT, Mississippi

Would like quarterback but probably would need to move up for one.

20. Lions: Rey Maualuga, MLB, Southern Cal

Or maybe OT to protect Stafford, or a pass rusher.

21. Eagles: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia

Could go with Vontae Davis or Pettigrew if still around.

22. Vikings: Eben Britton, OT, Arizona

Wild card for Vikings is Florida WR Percy Harvin.

23. Patriots: Clay Matthews, OLB, Southern Cal

They would like to move up for Raji. Vontae Davis also is possible.

24. Falcons: Ziggy Hood, DT, Missouri

Trade down is option. Look for Falcons to bolster defense.

25. Dolphins: Aaron Maybin, OLB, Penn State

If he lasts this long, he’s perfect fit.

26. Ravens: Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois

Could move down or go for Northern Illinois’ Larry English.

27 Colts: Everette Brown, DE, Florida State

Really need defensive tackle or WR like Brian Robiskie.

28. Bills: Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee

Phil Loadholt possible if Bills don’t get blocker with first pick.

29. Giants: Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina

Probably will have to choose Nicks or WR Kenny Britt.

30. Titans: James Laurinaitis, MLB, Ohio State

Need cornerback and wide receiver, but Laurinaitis may be too good to pass.

31. Cardinals: Donald Brown, RB, Connecticut

Could go for wide receiver if they trade Anquan Boldin.

32. Steelers: Phil Loadholt, OT, Oklahoma

Could take an interior blocker such as California’s Alex Mack or Oregon’s Max Unger.
