The Douglas County Kansas 4-H Foundation announces the names of current and alumni 4-H members who have been awarded college scholarships for the 2009-2010 school year.
All applicants must have been members of a Douglas County 4-H Club for at least three years. Winners are:
The Ralph G. and Cloyd B. Achning Memorial 4-H Scholarship: Weston Allen, Erin Ashcraft, Reagon Heikes, Rebecca Hinshaw, Alison Mesler, Grant Metsker, Braxton Nottingham, Conner Nottingham, Margaret Pendleton, Shon Price, and Libby Queen, Lawrence; John Brown, Wesley Callahan, Jaimie Goff and Emily Krysztof, Baldwin City; Timothy Moran and Kyle Morgison, Eudora; and Jessica Gibler and Garrett Jones, Lecompton.
The Bev and Bill Bradley Family Scholarship: Michelle Colgan, Lawrence.
The Clyde and Pauline Husted Memorial Scholarship: Brianna Krysztof, Baldwin City.
The George O. and Mildred M. Luckan Scholarship: William Pendleton, Lawrence; and Mary Cox, Eudora.
The Oletha Blevins Scholarship Fund: Kahlyn Heine, Lawrence.
Heine is also the recipient of the Fremont and Louise Hornberger Memorial Scholarship.
• The Douglas County Family & Community Education District Recognition Day will be May 7 in Building 21 at Douglas County Fairgrounds, 2110 Harper. The theme will be “Reminisce With Us.” Registration will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., with a noon buffet and door prizes. Food will be catered by L&M Catering.
Phillip D. Thomas, Wichita State University history professor, will give a lecture, “Do, Make Do, or Do Without: Life in Kansas, 1861-1961.” Thomas is a founding member of the Kansas Humanities Council Speakers Bureau. Pam Heikes, office professional for K-State Research & Extension-Douglas County, will give a power point presentation, “Yesterday’s Kitchens.” Judy Wulfkuhle, president of Douglas County FCE will present awards. Dwight Purvis, a former adjunct professor at the University of Virginia, will give a lecture, “The Horn: Past to Present.” Lesa Brose and Dianna Welsh, will present a skit “Victorian Vogue: Dressing for the Occasion.”
