Topeka ? An embattled state economic development agency will be changed, Democratic legislative leaders predicted Friday.

House Minority Leader Paul Davis, D-Lawrence, and Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley, D-Topeka, said that more oversight is needed of the Kansas Technology Enterprise Corp.

“There is a lack of accountability and lack of oversight,” Davis said.

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, also a Democrat, vetoed KTEC’s $12 million appropriation, saying its function should be folded into the Kansas Department of Commerce.

Republicans, who control the Legislature, have indicated they will put KTEC’s funding back in the budget when the wrap-up session starts, but even some GOP legislators have expressed displeasure.

The Senate Ways and Means Committee plugged in a $7 million appropriation for KTEC in its budget recommendation.

KTEC President and CEO Tracy Taylor has defended the agency, saying it is producing jobs and investment in Kansas.

“KTEC and its supporters understand it is now vital to continue to fight for KTEC and the innovation-based economy it has worked to build for the Kansas,” he said.
