The defendant in a Lawrence arson trial Thursday disputed his ex-girlfriend’s version of events that led up to her mobile home catching fire last summer.

“I did not. I honestly did not,” Trevor Toussaint, 44, said when asked whether he set the fire.

Toussaint faces arson and burglary charges in connection with a fire on June 10, 2008, at a former girlfriend’s southeastern Lawrence mobile home.

Toussaint said the former girlfriend, Kimberly Berry, testified to things that are “not true.” Earlier in the trial, Berry described at least five instances in the weeks leading up to the fire when Toussaint had altercations with her or entered her home without her permission and refused to leave.

Toussaint said that Berry, during an argument, had a gun in her hands and was waving it around, telling him to leave her home. She had testified that he had threatened her during the incident, but Toussaint said he wanted to talk to her and not give up on their relationship.

Toussaint said that during the fire he was walking several miles away from the mobile home because he was looking at a truck he wanted to buy.

Toussaint testified about the couple’s on-again, off-again relationship before the fire, saying Berry lived with him for weeks after the fire, even though he had been charged in the arson case.

Jurors deliberated for about one hour Thursday, and they will continue at 9 a.m. today.
