Above the law?

Local bicyclists too often ignore traffic laws and too seldom are held accountable for their actions.

For some difficult-to-understand reason, Lawrence police officers are quick to ticket motorists who barrel through stop lights and stop signs but seldom ticket bicyclists for failing to stop at marked intersections or riding through red lights.

Another difficult-to-understand matter is why those riding bicycles believe they do not have to adhere to traffic laws. They not only act as if they don’t have to pay any attention to stop signs or red lights; they also seem to go out of their way to thumb their noses at motorists stopped at traffic signs as they pedal through the intersection.

This past Thursday, a bicyclist apparently ignored a red light when crossing 23rd Street and was struck by a motorist. He ended up in the hospital. Wonder if the bicycle rider will be charged with a traffic violation?

It’s a wonder more oblivious or arrogant bicycle riders are not involved in serious accidents.

It would help if police officers would be as alert and attentive to ticketing bicycle riders for traffic violations as they are for those driving cars and trucks.
