U.S. Highway 59 work moves ahead

After months of delays, work to build the Douglas County portion of a new U.S. Highway 59 are gearing up.

Crews are busy moving dirt south of Lawrence, part of a $57 million contract to handle earthwork and build bridges for an 11.1-mile section of the new highway connecting Lawrence and Ottawa.

Work in Franklin County has been going for months, while unexpected soil conditions in Douglas County pushed back that portion of the work until January.

The project is on track for completion in late 2012, said Kimberly Qualls, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Department of Transportation.
