Old Home Town – 25 years ago

Brig. Gen. Chuck Yeager, space pioneer and World War II fighter pilot hero, recounted his efforts to become a pilot during a visit to Lawrence. His visit was sponsored by the aerospace engineering department at Kansas University. A native of West Virginia, he had enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a mechanic in 1941 and had worked his way to aviation immortality. He had been shot down, escaped and returned to combat.

Demand for home care visits by the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn. had “gone wild” the past year, said Marceil Lauppe, executive director. Home visits rose 35 percent to 19,724 and funding problems of a major nature faced the agency.
