From the Lawrence Daily World for April 21, 1909: “If the present high prices in all kinds of foodstuffs continue, the restaurants of Lawrence are planning a hike in the prices of meal tickets and single meals. … The post office department has issued a new order for rural routes. Heretofore, the patrons were expected to keep the roads and bridges in good order so mail wagons would move along without difficulty. And regulation mail boxes had to be furnished by the patrons. Now the order is that the patrons must buy in the aggregate of 50 cents worth of stamps per day to have their routes maintained.”
