Gay leads by three

Hilton Head Island, S.C. — Brian Gay moved a round away from his second career PGA Tour victory, shooting a 4-under 67 on Saturday to take a three-stroke lead over Tim Wilkinson in the Verizon Heritage.

Gay has made only one bogey at Harbour Town Golf Links and missed just five of its narrow, tree-lined fairways through three rounds to stand at 13 under. Wilkinson, a lefty from New Zealand seeking his first tour victory, finished with a 65, tied for the low third-round score. Lee Janzen, who hasn’t won on tour since the second of his U.S. Open victories in 1998, had two late birdies for a 69 that kept him in third, four shots behind.

Price up at Outback

Lutz, Fla. — Nick Price moved into position for his first Champions Tour victory, shooting a 4-under 67 to take a three-stroke lead into the final round of the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am. The 52-year-old Price, a three-time major champion and 18-time winner on the PGA Tour, had a 9-under 133 total at TPC Tampa Bay.

Finch leads China Open

Beijing — England’s Richard Finch shot a 6-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead over Spain’s Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano in the European tour’s Volvo China Open. Finch had an 8-under 208 total on the Beijing CBD International course. Fernandez-Castano shot a 68.

Actor plucks spectator

Lutz, Fla. — One day after she was plunked on the head by Bill Murray’s wayward tee shot, Gayle DiMaggio had a request: a signed copy of his movie “Caddyshack.”

The actor, meanwhile, was back on the course Saturday for the second round of the Outback Pro-Am. And the course marshals took no chances: They wore hard hats.

DiMaggio lives on the course where Murray hooked his shot far to the left of the No. 9 hole at TPC Tampa Bay. She was hit on the left temple Friday as she stood in her backyard to watch the first round. She never lost consciousness but needed stitches at a hospital.
