Royals put Gordon on DL

Kansas City, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals have placed third baseman Alex Gordon on the 15-day disabled list because of a cartilage tear in his right hip. The Royals said Thursday that Gordon would undergo surgery in Vail, Colo., today to have the tear repaired. His return is uncertain. To fill his position on the roster, the team said it was recalling outfielder Mitch Maier from triple-A Omaha.

Pujols to headline Derby

St. Louis — St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols plans to participate in the Home Run Derby during All-Star week at the new Busch Stadium. The announcement was made Thursday in a statement released by Major League Baseball. The Home Run Derby is July 13.
