Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for April 14, 1909: “Although the thermometer dropped to 4 degrees below freezing and ice was formed last night, fruit growers here say the county escaped with little damage. Strawberries in particular seemed to fare well. … John Kilworth has sold his farm near Riverside to George W. Husted. The farm contains 127 acres and brought $12,000, a pretty good price for Douglas County land. … The Commercial Club will send a man to Omaha to see Union Pacific officials about closing the culvert north of the depot and building a permanent levee there. … Hundreds of women swarmed through the capital in Springfield, Ill., today, buttonholing the members of the legislature on behalf of women’s suffrage. They held the House spellbound with their eloquence and then went to the Senate for the same activities. However, the Senate barred their entrance since it was in session. … Officers raided a local barber shop last night and found an opium pipe and two drug victims. Both were arrested and an investigation is under way about the barber shop.”
