Ortiz Duo Fourth: Steve Ortiz and Dominic Ortiz of Lawrence finished fourth in a Joe Bass Tournament on Stockton Lake with 18.97 pounds of fish and earned $497.

LG&A Placers: Rosie Schaumburg of Lawrence Gymnastics & Athletics finished fourth in the all-around in U-13 Level 8 competition at the state championships. Annie Soderberg was fifth and Jacqueline Zaitz eighth in the U-14 division. Grace Bartle and Jesse Abernathy finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in U-12 Level 7 competition.

Grove, Cummins Low: Tyler Cummins and Kit Grove each shot a 76 for low score in the Jayhawk Golf Club weekly tournament opener Saturday at Alvamar. Conrad Roberts shot a 77, followed by Bud Stagg 82 and Brent Mertz 86. In net scoring, Jim Day was low with a 72, followed by Mike Naegele 74, Travis Walsh 77 and Van Reichert and Bob Bridges, both with 80s.

Horseshoe Club: Anyone interested in pitching horseshoes is invited to a meeting of the Lawrence Horseshoe Club at 6:30 p.m. today at the Clinton Parkway Hy-Vee dining area. The club pitches every Thursday evening at Broken Arrow Park. For information, call Wynne Mihura at 843-8450.

KU Conference: Kansas Athletics Inc. will conduct the Midwest Sports Performance Conference on May 8-9 at the Anderson Center. Emphasis will be on preparing an athlete to compete in any sport at any level. A total of 20 sports science professionals will be presenters. KU Powerlifters: Kansas University students Randall Coburn and Jake Cuevas recently traveled to Baton Rouge, La., with their coach, Marty Tuley, to compete in the 2009 USA Powerlifting Collegiate Nationals. Coburn competed at 220 pounds and finished with the following results: Squat – 475 pounds, Bench Press – fouled out, Dead Lift – 500 pounds. Cuevas also competed at 220 pounds and turned in the following lifts: Squat – 545 pounds, Bench Press – 297 pounds, Dead Lift – 600 pounds.

Thames signs with Baker: Free State High senior Lauren Thames recently signed a national letter of intent to play tennis at Baker University. Thames, a state-qualifier and the Firebirds’ MVP last fall, plans to pursue a nursing degree at Baker. She is the daughter of Tom and Lisa Thames.

Folosom inks with Ottawa: Free State High senior Abby Folsom recently signed a national letter of intent to join the Ottawa University track and field team. Folsom is a two-year letter-winning discus thrower for the Firebirds. She is the daughter of Tony and Cindy Folsom and plans to major in exercise science.
