New plan sought for Kemper Arena

? Kansas City is discussing ways to free itself from part of the financial burden of Kemper Arena.

Since the Sprint Center opened downtown in fall 2007, Kemper has been relying on subsidies from the city.

The director of Convention and Entertainment Centers, Oscar McGaskey, discussed the issue Wednesday with the City Council’s Finance and Audit Committee.

McGaskey said he would like to solicit proposals from groups interested in managing Kemper with no operating subsidy. The city would continue to make debt payments on the facility.

He said if there are no viable proposals, the city also could consider selling the complex.
