Boston Marathon: Ten runners from Lawrence will be participating in the Boston Marathon on April 20. They are Keith Bates, Jorge Carvajal, Christi Douglas, Chris Lounsbury, Chris Nyberg, Alex Rock, Elise Rock, Robert Schmidt, Michael Zabel and Erika Nilles-Plumlee. Nilles-Plumlee will be running for the Alz Stars team to heighten awareness of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Horseshoe Club: Anyone interested in pitching horseshoes is invited to a meeting of the Lawrence Horseshoe Club at 6:30 p.m. April 9 at the Clinton Parkway Hy-Vee dining area. The club pitches every Thursday evening at Broken Arrow Park. For information, call Wynne Mihura at 843-8450.

Valencia Fifth: Michigan University’s Alysha Valencia, a 2006 Free State High grad, finished fifth overall in the 3,000-meter run at the Springbreak Collegiate Invitational in Irvine, Calif. She was clocked in 9:56:65.

Free State Spring Football Meeting: Free State High football coach Bob Lisher will hold a spring football meeting at 7 tonight for all potential players and parents of the 2009 FSHS football team. The meeting will take place in the Free State auditorium.

Free State seniors tapped for all-star team: Free State High senior football players Matt Frantz, Eric Franz and Mitch Werts have been selected to play in the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association’s Metro All-Star game the third week in June. All three players contributed heavily to Free State’s run to the Class 6A state title game in 2008.

Scott Sizzling: Former Firebird Jessica Scott, now a freshman volleyball player at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, was one of 10 student-athletes at the school to earn a 4.0 grade-point average during the fall semester.
