Two burglary suspects in a car with a Douglas County license plate led the Jefferson County sheriff on a car chase that reached speeds in excess of 100 mph Wednesday morning, the sheriff said.

The suspects are wanted in connection with a residential burglary that occurred about 11:10 a.m. in Shawnee County, said Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig, who happened to spot the suspects’ vehicle in nearby Meriden.

“I turned around, and they ran from me,” the sheriff said.

The suspects led the sheriff on a chase on Kansas Highway 4, from Meriden to east Topeka, where he lost the suspects’ vehicle near Billard Airport, Herrig said.

A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper working an unrelated vehicle accident at U.S. Highway 24 and Kansas Highway 4 spotted the car and tried to throw out a tire-deflation device to stop the suspect’s car but wasn’t successful, law enforcement said.

A Shawnee County sheriff’s deputy located an unoccupied vehicle matching the description around 1:08 p.m. Wednesday, said spokesman Jay Simecka.

Simecka said one of the suspects in the car confronted a man at the location of the residential burglary, pointed a handgun at him and forced him to go to the back of the residence.

“The men told the homeowner’s relative to stay there, and both men got into a green Ford Taurus and fled the area,” Simecka said.
