Treasure hunt to stretch for miles on US 36

? Thousands of people are expected to travel across the state on U.S. Highway 36 this weekend looking for garage sale and flea market bargains, food, antiques and crafts.

“Anything imaginable that you can buy, you can probably buy it somewhere along Highway 36 this weekend,” said Jane Ann Carlgren, who owns the Antique Mall in downtown Scandia.

Every county along the highway is participating in the third annual U.S. Highway 36 Treasure Hunt.

Carlgren said there will be garage sales, flea markets and food vendors along the highway across the entire state, which amounts to about 400 miles. At least two towns in Missouri also are participating in this year’s event.

Participating locations will open at 8 a.m. today and Sunday. Most locations will remain open each day until people stop coming through, Carlgren said.

Guidebooks will be available for $5 in every county. More information and a complete map is available online at ushwy36.com.

Carlgren said that last year people from 27 different states visited her antique store during the weekend event.

“It’s good for the state. It’s good for our local economies, and it’s good for awareness, to let people know what we have to offer,” Carlgren said.

The annual event is sponsored by the U.S. 36 Highway Association and local tourism organizations and chambers of commerce.
