Federal charges have been filed against a 25-year-old man accused of possessing a firearm in Douglas County after a felony conviction, prosecutors announced Wednesday morning.

Patrick Walker is accused of possessing the firearm on May 3, 2008, U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren's office said. If convicted, Walker faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000, said Jim Cross, spokesman for Melgren.

Lawrence police investigated the case.

As a CCH Instructor, I think it's great this guy got the time for illegally possessing a firearm. I also fully understand the differences between federal and state charges. But, has anyone noticed there are more and more Douglas County cases being charged in other court systems outside of Douglas County? Makes one wonder about the competence of the District Attorney's Office and our local judiciary.

All felons should own a firearm to protect themselves from other felons. Lol.
