Bakers called to duty for annual Apple Day

? Volunteers are starting to bake pies for the upcoming Apple Day celebration at Fort Riley on Sept. 27.

Volunteers will bake approximately 1,800 pies, using some 9,000 apples, 800 pounds of sugar, 500 pounds of flour, 350 pounds of butter, 200 ounces of cinnamon, more than 2,000 feet of aluminum foil, 40 rolls of freezer paper and a lot of disposable gloves.

Homemade apple pies, whole and by the slice, are available on Apple Day at the Custer House near Cavalry Parade Field. Vanilla ice cream will be available to top off the pie.

The apple pie making marathon will begin on Monday and run through Sept. 26.
