Old Home Town – 25 years ago

There continued to be a furor in Baldwin City over the city council’s firing of Police Chief George Rebman. One group was pushing for a recall vote involving the council and Mayor Merlin Ford.

Taking the biggest jump since the mid-1960s, the Lawrence school district’s enrollment grew by 116 pupils for the fall semester. The headcount showed 7,155 youngsters for the fall of 1983. The previous year, the total had been 7,039.

More than 600 turned out at the Meadowbrook complex for the annual chamber of commerce mixer designed to greet new educators to the community. Again, the weather proved to be favorable after earlier fears of a rainout.
