Lawrence teachers’ contract ratified

Lawrence teachers’ long-awaited contract was made official at a special meeting Monday night, during which the school board ratified the contract.

The Lawrence Education Association and the Lawrence school board met to finalize the contract that was agreed upon by the LEA and the school district in mid-August. It concluded months of negotiations, which included using a federal mediator.

Lawrence teachers ratified the work agreement last week.

Contract negotiations were stalled in June after the two sides failed to agree. Due in part to the work of the mediator, both sides agreed on a 2.9 percent raise for teachers, more preparation time and a new retirement plan. The ratified contract also includes a raise in extra duty pay and the implementation of five days of leave time, to be conducted on a trial basis.
