From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 11, 1908: “‘Are you a member of or pledged to the so-called secret fraternities or sororities which are in any degree public school organizations?’ That is being asked of every student who enrolls in the high school this winter in an effort to stamp out secret societies from local schools. Officials say no high school ‘frats or sororities’ of any kind will be allowed and that those who take part face penalties. : Robert Starkweather narrowly escaped death this morning when he was struck by an automobile driven by Dr. A.B. Sellards and thrown into a hitching post. He was on his bicycle and miraculously escaped with only bad bruises, sore knees and ‘a good scare.'”
