The attorney for a 17-year-old murder defendant from Lawrence has been allowed to withdraw from the case.

District Judge Michael Malone this afternoon appointed Julia Spainhour, of the Northeast Kansas Conflict Office, to represent Kellam D. Jones, who faces felony murder and attempted aggravated robbery charges.

Spainhour replaces defense attorney Craig Stancliffe, who represented Jones until Malone decided last week to try him as an adult. Stancliffe said in court Wednesday afternoon that his case load could limit his preparations in the Jones case.

Stancliffe also told Malone he could have conflicts in the case because of his involvement with the juvenile system in the county and potential witnesses who could be called in the Jones case.

Prosecutors allege that Jones shot and killed 20-year-old Roland Klundt on June 7 at 1311 Del. during a botched robbery. Prosecutors have said that Jones and Gage Hauk, 18, were trying to rob Klundt’s house of drugs and money. Before he was shot, Klundt shot and killed Hauk.

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson on Wednesday asked Malone to double Jones’ $250,000 bond, but Malone told him to bring the request up again during a Friday hearing in front of the new defense attorney. Jones is in custody at the Douglas County Jail.
