A Lawrence man pleaded guilty Thursday afternoon to voluntary manslaughter related to a February beating death of a 62-year-old Lawrence man.

Jerod Buffalohead, 36, agreed to plead guilty in Douglas County District Court to a lesser charge instead of facing a jury trial later this month for reckless second-degree murder.

Chief District Judge Robert Fairchild accepted Buffalohead's plea in the beating death of Jerry L. Deshazer, 62, Feb. 2 at Deshazer's home in southeastern Lawrence after a night of drinking.

Co-defendant Shanna Friday, 37, faces a Nov. 3 trial for reckless second-degree murder in the case. Prosecutors have accused both Buffalohead and Friday of striking Deshazer, who bled to death.

Depending on his criminal history, Buffalohead now faces anywhere from 4.5 years to 20.5 years in prison. If convicted of reckless second-degree murder, the maximum sentence was 41 years.

It is sad that a person can kill someone and only get a short time in prison. I guess it pays to be drunk and ignorant. Then man should have got at least a hard 50. The DA must have been scared of looking stupid in frount of the judge.

Glad to see Jerod has grown up a lot since high school.

Your presumption about convincing the jury of intent is probably spot on. Sounds like the DA got a little scared of that. Another possibility is that they're giving him a deal to nail the co-defendant.

So basically he says he just beat him really bad, but did not mean to kill him. And the DA was not sure they could convince a jury that he meant to kill him. Does this sound correct?I will assume he will get closer to the 20.5 then the 4.5, but still seem a little light.

So he will be out of prison in 4.5 to 20.5 years and the victim will still be deceased. Sounds fair.

I hope Jerry and the DeShazer family will get some peace from this confession of wrong doing.
