Trick-or-treaters swarm downtown area

Halloween is probably the only time Hannah Montana, Batman, and Elvis will walk the streets of Lawrence at the same time.

Kids and their pets dressed in their Halloween best to trick-or-treat in downtown Lawrence Friday night.

Business owners handed out goodies to the crowds. Costume-clad kids said they always look forward to Halloween because of the candy.

“I think it is fun,” said a boy dressed as a ninja.

Some first-time trick-or-treaters were looking forward to the creative costumes on display.

“It’s been a lot of fun seeing all the different costumes and just the activity downtown because downtown is pretty awesome anyways,” said Ami Bruce, while holding her son Porter who was dressed as a scarecrow for the night.

Besides giving out traditional candy, businesses also handed out balloon flowers and dog treats for the four-legged trick-or-treaters. Some merchants said they enjoy giving out candy on Halloween because it brings the community together.

“Look at how happy everybody is,” said Kathy Swanson, owner of the clothing store Spectators. “It’s just such a great community event and I also love it that people who haven’t been downtown in a long time get an opportunity to come downtown.”
