Girl Scouts will sell cookies next month

Still hoarding Thin Mints in your deep freeze? Time to think about adding to your stash.

For the first time, Girl Scouts in the Lawrence area will begin selling their famed cookies in November.

Starting Nov. 1, 25,000 Girl Scouts in the 47 counties that make up the Girl Scouts of Northeast Kansas and Northwest Missouri council will begin offering those Thin Mints, along with other traditional favorites like Shortbread, Peanut Butter Patties and Carmel DeLites. The year’s new cookie is the Daisy Go-Round, which comes in 100-calorie, single-serve packages.

Cookie ordering will run through Nov. 30. Cookie delivery will take place in January 2009. Community booth sales will be Jan. 10 through Feb. 1, 2009.

This year, the price is $3.50 per box.

Seventy percent of the cookie proceeds (or $2.44 per box) supports Girl Scout activities locally – providing funds for troop activities, leadership development, skill-building activities and maintenance of nine camp facilities, among other things.

Also, each troop earns 53 cents for every box of cookies it sells. Troops decide together how best to use their proceeds.

Thirty percent of the per-box price goes to the cost of the cookie sale itself.
