Pedestrian in fatality at 23rd and Iowa was under the influence of alcohol

A Virginia man, who died after being struck by a motorcycle while walking across Iowa Street on Oct. 17, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, a Lawrence police report released this week said.

The accident occurred about 10 p.m. near the intersection of 23rd and Iowa streets. Police said Martin Howard, of Virginia Beach, Va., was walking from east to west across Iowa Street near Chili’s Grill and Bar, 2319 Iowa, when he was struck by a 1996 Yamaha 600 driven by Erryn Kendle, 19, Eudora.

Kendle, who was driving south on Iowa Street, had minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Howard, 55, died the next day after suffering significant head trauma from the accident, his family said. The police report said Howard was in the roadway illegally.

Howard was in Lawrence for one day on a business trip and told a loved one he was going out for a walk before the accident, according to his brother. Accident investigators said they’re continuing to investigate what occurred.

A 43-year-old Portage, Ind., man died in an accident at the same intersection July 15, when a semitrailer driver made an illegal left turn in front of his motorcycle. Charges were not filed and no traffic citations have been issued against the semitrailer driver, Daniel L. Arnold, 52, of Texas.
