Readers invited to submit work for Journal-World photo project

Beneath the Friday night lights at Haskell Stadium in Lawrence, Free State Firebird fans cheer on their team in a fall football game. Journal-World photographer Mike Yoder got below the first row of seats and waited until the fans reacted to their team. By using a little amount of flash on the fans in the foreground, the Yoder was able to underexpose for the stadium lights and the early evening sky.

Thirteen people submitted photography portfolios for my last Behind the Lens column Sept. 21. The images were diverse and demonstrated that there are a lot of talented photographers around Lawrence. Those 13 photographers now have online galleries of their work linked from that column.

I want to continue to get reader participation in this column so I’m again inviting photographers to submit their artwork. This time I’m suggesting three photo assignments. Participants can pick one or all of the assignments and following the required guidelines, submit photographs for inclusion in a Journal-World online photo gallery or for possible publication in the daily newspaper in the Behind the Lens column on Nov. 23.

The assignments:

¢ ‘Tis the Season: This can be anything dealing with the onset of winter and the holiday season. Scary things, fall leaves, signs of winter. This is a good category for the photographer who prefers landscapes, still life and contemplative scenes.

¢ A Sporting Time: I want to see photographs of people engaging in sports or attending sporting events, such as tailgating, Late Night in the Phog or backyard flag football. This is for the folks who like to mix it up and get in the middle of the action.

¢ Election 2008: Lot of possibilities here to get creative and offer your view of what it’s like to participate in our democracy.

Here are the requirements:

¢ Digital files should be sized approximately 5 inches by 7 inches at 150 dots per inch.

¢ Photographs should include a simple caption to include the basic who, what and where of the photograph.

¢ Limit of three submissions per photographer

E-mail entries to myoder@ljworld.com or deliver a CD of entries to Mike Yoder, Lawrence Journal-Word, 645 N.H., Lawrence, KS 66044. By submitting a photograph, you give the Journal-World and The World Company the permission to reproduce the image in the newspaper or online as part of our Behind the Lens column.

Deadline for submissions is Nov. 10.
