Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Oct. 11, 1908: “Twelve more dogs were killed here by local police today as fears of hydrophobia grew. Even several cats also have been put down because of fear of a growing epidemic. : Frothing at the mouth, its eyes a glassy green, gnashing its teeth viciously, a large white horse belonging to farmer Fred Allen went mad Sunday and chased Allen’s mother-in-law into a barn, narrowly missing harming her. The horse seemingly had been in perfect health but apparently was suffering from some form of hydrophobia that has hit so many dogs here of late. The horse was immediately killed. : The bulletin of the state board of health for August says that Kansas has seen remarkable drops in incidences of such feared diseases as tuberculosis, diphtheria, scarlet fever and smallpox. Typhoid fever, however, remains a growing problem but for the most part Kansas was given ‘a good bill of health’ through August. Smallpox in its most virulent form seems to be getting more under control.”
