Shedding light on bicycle safety
A bicycle equipped with good lights can make all the difference when it comes to riding safely when darkness falls, whether on a city street, touring route or in the back country.
The type of lighting device a rider chooses for a bicycle varies. In general, a cyclist can go with one or more of three general light options:
¢ Front safety lights: Provide a focused beam of light to illuminate the road or a trail in low-light conditions. Front lights, however, are not intended for extended riding at night.
¢ High-powered headlights: Provide strong forward-facing light rather than a regular front light. These allow a rider to see in pitch-dark and difficult conditions.
¢ Rear safety lights: Emit a steady or flashing red light that allows a person in a vehicle, on foot or even on another bicycle to spot you from behind. Rear safety lights are generally lighter and more compact than front-facing lights.
