KU Percussion Ensemble to perform

Kansas University’s fine arts school presents the KU Percussion Ensemble in concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The ensemble is directed by Julius Zilinskas, lecturer in percussion at KU.

The 14-student ensemble will perform “Alborada Del Gracioso,” by Maurice Ravel, for two marimbas; “Parade (Xuan),” by Guo Wenjing, for six gongs; “Mudra,” by Bob Becker, for solo prepared drum and percussion ensemble; “Trio per Uno,” by Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic; West African drumming, directed by Dylan Bassett, played on original African drums; and “Stick Schtick” by Chris Brooks for eight hard wood poles.

“The audience will hear a variety of sounds, especially in, ‘Parade,’ which is written for six gongs and played with mallets and sticks,” Zilinskas said. “It’s impressive how many different sounds can be produced with a single gong or all of the gongs together.”

The free concert will take place in Murphy Hall, Room 130. Call 864-3436 for more information.
