Lawrence Civic Choir to perform songs of the season

Members of the Lawrence Civic Choir practice holiday songs Nov. 4 at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Drive.

Those who are excited to get into the holiday spirit will be sure to enjoy the variety and musical talent of the Lawrence Civic Choir’s Holiday Concert.

This year’s concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 13 at Lawrence Free Methodist Church, 3001 Lawrence Ave. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students, and $5 for children under age 12.

The choir will perform its annual December show with Steve Eubank as director for the seventh year in a row. The choir now performs three concerts each year, with the holiday performance being a highlight for many participants.

“It’s a fun group,” says singer Gary Haworth, who has sung in the choir for about four years. “They take music seriously, but it’s nothing high-pressure that we do.”

The multi-generational, community-oriented choir has wide appeal for audiences of diverse ages and interests. As Eubank describes, the 115-voice group choir is made up of “KU students, retirees, and anyone from doctors to housewives.”

Some members have been involved since the choir’s founding in 1975, while younger participants just joined this past year. The choir has grown in popularity and numbers, the diversity within its choir being a key to its success.

“It’s really a snapshot or microcosm of the community of Lawrence as a whole,” Eubank says. “It’s a very diverse group.”

For this year’s Holiday Concert, the choir will perform Vivaldi’s “Gloria” for the first half of the program, and finish up the second half with a variety of more contemporary seasonal pieces. Other more traditional carols will also be performed throughout the evening.

Eubank is convinced it will be one of the best concerts the choir has had in a long time.

“They’re awesome and just doing a really great job,” he says. “We have new fresh members added to balance the ensemble, and we’re just having a great time.”

Singer Jean Milstead, who has sung for four years, says the concert is a highlight for her.

“It just puts you in the mood of being joyful, remembering why we’re here, giving back to others and appreciating family,” she says.
