Perry-Lecompton seniors Kali Roberts, foreground, and Stephanie Horton, paint a banner Tuesday for the school's high school football championship game. The Kaws will play Topeka-Hayden for the state 4A championship Saturday in Salina.

Annabelle, the 1-year-old cow, is the messenger.

Pictures of the white Charolais with “PL Kaws #1” and “Go Kaws” painted on her are plastered all over Perry and Lecompton.

The cow’s owners added the message as the Perry-Lecompton High School football team has reached the 4A state championship. The school’s first trip to the title game in its 37-year history has residents in the Kansas River valley communities in a frenzy.

“Oh my goodness. That’s about all everybody talks about,” said Mary K. Hurd, who owns Perry Milling Inc. with her husband, Don.

Her grandson, Logan Hurd, is a junior offensive tackle, and the Hurds even posted a photo of the “Go Kaws” cow inside the store. About 2 miles south across the Kansas River, Annabelle’s photo is posted in the glass door of the Lecompton post office.

The cow’s owners, Anna and Gene Barrett of Barrett Cattle west of Perry, posted the message on the cow Thursday before the team’s semifinal win. When Anna Barrett, a Perry-Lecompton alumnus, e-mailed the photo to people, it became a sensation, symbolic of the community’s support for coach Mike Paramore’s team, Barrett said.

“It’s just a group of young men who have played together for a long time. They’re just going out and getting it done, basically in a quiet way,” she said.

The school district serves students from Perry, Lecompton, Grantville and Williamstown, including several rural areas. Activities director Theresa Beatty said the Kaws, who are 10-3, have been good for several years, but they’ve finally broken through to meet 4A powerhouse Topeka Hayden in the championship at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Beatty said the community is buzzing, and so many people plan to make the drive to Salina Saturday that the school’s principal J.B. Elliott has joked: “Last one out of Perry turn out the lights.”

The team’s success is great for the rural and smaller communities, she said, especially during tougher economic times.

“It is something everybody can look forward to and enjoy and not have to think about that other stuff for a Saturday afternoon,” Beatty said.

Tuesday was the last day of school before Thanksgiving, but seniors Kali Roberts and Stephanie Horton were working on a huge blue banner.

“I think people are still in shock. This is our senior year, and we’re actually going to state,” Roberts said.

So many people in the area have known the players since they were little, which makes the team special, said Jennifer Folks, of Lecompton. Her nephews, Eric and Trevor Hastert, play on the team, and she said the school’s booster club plans a community sendoff Saturday morning before the team and fans head west to Salina.

“It’s not just a high school thing; It’s a whole community thing,” Folks said.

SERIOUS. We have a team in lawrence that is going to state for the first time in its history and were writing stories on a cow in perry. granted i know that this paper services perry, but still ARE YOU KIDDING ME. If the other high school in this town was going to state their would be a story on at least the front page of the sports page every day. if you cant write about them equally then dont write about them at all.

The bias is all in your head. Trust me.

Lighten up lynchburgsbest. Free State AND LHS get plenty of press. How often have you seen anything about Perry-Lecompton? This is a hardworking group of young men that deserve some recognition. What's wrong with having a little fun? GO KAWS!!!

Jonathan Kealing 6 years, 9 months ago

lynch-There will be a similar story on Free State coming tomorrow afternoon. We'll have plenty of coverage of the FSHS game.Jonathan KealingOnline editor

If you don't like the coverage you're getting, go paint an animal.

Lynch, you are being "udderly" ridiculous. Why don't you vent your "angus" in Salina on Saturday. Go KAWS, You are amazing!!!!!!

Lynchburg, If I were you I would spend less time on the internet, and go back to school to learn how to correctly write a sentence.

plkaws 6 years, 9 months ago

Maybe you didn't read the article but this is real history. The first time in 37 years! Maybe you were busy looking at the cow, haven't you seen one before? These are hard working people and kids and they deserve every minute and page of press they get!!Go KAWS!!!!

Andrew Boyd 6 years, 9 months ago

Im pretty sure this is the LAWRENCE journal world which regardless of were it gose it services the town of lawrence and its residences long before it services any cow poke in this perry. so take your 37 years and stick it. free state is going for the first time in school history.

countrygirl 6 years, 9 months ago

My my aren't we rather self centered. Ever here of area coverage? There is a world outside of Lawrence you know. Or is that what frightens you?

another_concerned_parent 6 years, 9 months ago

lynchburgsbest: You need to lighten up. I am glad that FSHS is going to state for the first time in their 11 or 12 years of existence. However, Perry has been around a lot longer. Most families in the Lawrence school district have experienced going to a state championship of some sort. These kids and their families are getting to experience something that has eluded them for almost 4 decades. I think it is great that the LDJW is finally giving Perry-Lecompton some coverage. So lynchburgsbest, BACK OFF and GO KAWS!!!!!!!!

buddy2me 6 years, 9 months ago

lynchburg...don't act like Free State never gets any coverage in the LJWorld. They do a good job on covering each school. I would bet that if you asked a LHS kid or family they feel like Free State gets more coverage, it just depends on where you go to school and how you see it. Get over yourself, have another cup of coffee and chill out. GEEZ!!

perryproud 6 years, 9 months ago

Lynchburg- grow up. PLHS has been around a LOT longer than Freestate. We are proud of our team and our boys. They've accomplished a lot and I know I'd love to see them win on Saturday. We may paint cows to show our appriciation, but at least we aren't out getting into trouble or destroying property. Have you also noticed that none of our PLHS fans have been on here bashing your team? Grow up and show a little respect. GO KAWS!!!

hey lynch, the FREE STATE JOURNAL WORLD does a great job covering all the schools, free state gets the same coverage or more than LHS, I am rooting for both free state and the kaws to bring back championships for both communities, lynch, come out of your moms basement and find reality!!!!!!!!

Lynchburgbest-First of all, the women shown in this photo are part of my family and my son could've been shown in this picture as well, being the two women that are shown above are his aunt and great-aunt! There is absolutely nothing wrong with supporting the school that you graduated from! I'm sure if you really wanted to paint some cows, you could probably just call up someone from Jefferson County and they could deliver a cow for you to paint on!! The Barrett's are super, nice people, so maybe they can help you out with that! Seriously, I did not graduate from Perry-Lecompton High School, in fact my high school hated Perry-Lecompton, but I am from around that area, and not only are the students of PLHS excited about this event, everyone in Jefferson County, Kansas are excited for the Kaws! These boys have worked so hard to get to where they are, and anyone who watches the news can see that they have truely pulled together as not only a team, but as a family to make this year's football season a success at PLHS!! Secondly, any team that is going to the State Championship should be honored and be able celebrate in their own way! This is the way we do it in Jefferson County (Perry, Oskaloosa (GO BEARS!), McLouth, Valley Falls, etc.)! I'm sure ya'all at FSHS have a special way of celebrating your victory from last week, and I'm sure the Lawrence Community is pulling together to support your team this weekend! I am friends with one of your coaches, and I know that there are several people that are so proud of your school! So, back-off of Perry and just go play your game! You don't have to rain on other people's parade!! For all of you actually supporting the Kaws....let's show FSHS (most importantly the ding-dong that ran his mouth about how we support our teams) how we celebrate...Jefferson County and PLHS style!! GO KAWS!!! * Annie, I know you'll be reading this! Nobody gripes about my family....or my family's cows!

I'm surprised there haven't been people whining about paint somehow causing cruelty to cows. They did about chickens. But, I guess you eat cows. Wait! You eat chickens, too. Guess they probably will be around later.

mmiller 6 years, 9 months ago

lynchburgsbest,Chill! Let these smaller schools in the outside ruaral areas soak up some of the attention!! Good god! The media tends to grant coverage to the schools only in the cities. The rural schools harldy ever receive recognition from the media in these parts. This is a wonderful accomplishment for PLHS, and it certainly deserves a lot of media attention!!

countrygirl 6 years, 9 months ago

gr--it's a special marking paint that's used for marking livestock and it won't hurt them--unlike the house type paint that was used on those chickens. A farmer isn't going to do anything to purposely hurt an animal that is part of their way of making a living.

Obviously, someone doesn't realize that the Perry-Lecompton school district is in Jefferson and DOUGLAS counties so why wouldn't a DOUGLAS county paper write about our school district -- just as they would Baldwin and Lawrence. I am so very proud of our school district and it's accomplishments and the fact that our young men are going to State is WONDERFUL --GO KAWS. But, if you really want to know what this school district is about check out our academic ratings, free full day kindergarten, pre-K program, small class sizes, Perry Elementary nature gardens, Lecompton Elementary nature gardens, high school green house, etc. etc. It's not just the sports, it's the entire package -- I've sent four children through this school district and have been honored to do so. To see more visit. http://www.usd343.org

Lynchburg isn't alone. The whole town whines about biased coverage in the LJW. When the LJW writers hear that they're biased against Free State AND biased against Lawrence High, what are they supposed to do? That's right, go to Perry-Lecompton where the covereage is appreciated.

"There is a world outside of Lawrence you know." That is right! There is Perry-Lecompton, too -- with its painted cow and everything! Oh, what a wonderful and diverse world. If you paint a cow that wanders into the woods with no one around to see it, is it still public art?

IslandBug 6 years, 9 months ago

Let's all try and remember that the younger generation learns by example. Are we setting a good example by bashing a hard working football team? The starting players are practicing against young men that will be our starters next year. They have done a great job in preparing the Kaws for these tough football games. So to those of you that are supporting our team from the sidelines, GREAT JOB and let's not forget all the hard work you have contributed on this incredible journey.GO KAWS - WIN STATE

This is just another fine example of how our PL community rallies around our school events, whether athletic, theatre, band or academic activities. What a great year for PL football! See you in Salina--PLAY WITH YOUR HEARTS BOYS! Go Kaws!

Kinda of amazing when the only things in perry is the perry pub and a painted cow. Im also glad i have heard the opinon of every person that lives in perry. my whole point to making my intital statement was to prove that the lawrence journal world dose not give equal treatment to all of the schools inn its coverage area. for example the lawrence journal world services Basehor-Linwood. i havent seen very many stories written on the bobcats since i have been reading the LJW. (reader for 15 years). I also have not seen stories written on the other schools that are in the coverage area of the lawrence journal world like Perry. in my opinion if you cant cover all high schools the same way then you should not cover any one of them.Good luck perry at state GO KAWS!!!Good luck free state at state GO FIREBIRDS!!!

Where is the humanity in the treatment of a defenseless cow used as an advertising tool looked upon in jest by the humans who are using this animal as a piece of property most likely to be later led to slaughter is a joke and reflection of our greedy consumer society. It is no wonder why America and the world has taken the low road in the name of economy. This poor cow needs to be set free to roam the ranges and grasslands without a care in the world and it makes me smile to think that this is what it really wants instead of used as a tool for a sport that promotes child voilence against themselves teaching brutality and losing. My words cannot explain the disappointment I have in our race. I want to start a movement, big or small, just a little will help relieve the pain this causes my wrenching. Reflection and reflecting on matters.

perryproud 6 years, 9 months ago

lynchburg, you're wrong. We also have a library in Perry. You should visit it sometime. It has a dictionary in it and I bet they'd let you check it out.

msskcsa 6 years, 9 months ago

To everyone who commented about this comment and the future comments that will be below this comment:1. This heifer is set free to roam the ranges and grasslands without a care in the world.2. This heifer will not be later led to be slaughtered.3. What race are you talking about? The "white" people in the picture? What does race have to do with anything?4. Start your movement.... Don't talk about how you want to start it, do it.5. I feel bad for all of you that do not have self confidence and feel that it is necessary to say the things that you are or did just to make your self esteem higher. (FYI- It does not work, no matter how hard you try to put people down, in the end, you do not feel better.)6. Why is everyone making this a battle between the cities/towns? Schools? This has to do with children, not adults. Let us be mature about this. (Especially when the children at the schools will be reading this!)7. If you have a problem with something, get away from it. Meaning- please stop reading the newspaper that you are oh so upset with.8. Be happy that your community is supporting others. Especially when they are supporting a small community that may not have as much as the larger cities/communities.9. Yes, if the woods are public then the cow would be public art. If the woods are not public, of course it would not be public art if no one can see it. Now it does get tricky. If the woods are not public property BUT you can see the cow, then yes, the cow would technically be public art. But you cannot touch it.10. PETA can stand for themselves. Let them do their job, not you.11. Yes, they have a computer lab. And of course they are out of school- Thanksgiving is tomorrow.I hope this helps all of you out.

IslandBug 6 years, 9 months ago

To lynchburgsbest:Do you think about what you write? How many stories have there been about PLHS, before now? Not many, the paper writes about the positive things in a school district. In order to write about the surrounding schools, they would need to be on the upside. I am not saying we are not surrounded by great schools, it is just PLHS's time to be in the spotlight. Last year it was another great school. So stay tuned and maybe a different school will be your target next year. Will it be Eudora, Baldwin, Tonganoxie, Basehor-Linwood, etc. Only time will tell who will be on top next year. I do hope we have another school in the surrounding area in the spotlight next year. But for this moment.......Go Kaws!!!!!!

It seems that most people who have talked very negative about this article forget that it is the Perry-LECOMPTON school district. There is just as much district in Douglas County than Jefferson County. In fact there are parts of our district probably witihin 2 miles of the Lawrence city limits. There are several very talented athletes on this Kaw team that are from rural Lecompton so why wouldnt the LJW cover this.Secondly, the Barrett Farm is not located in Perry it is in rural Grantville (so to the comment about only having the Pub and a cow, well we only have a Pub.) Perry is an excellent small town with excellent people and excellent students. And yeah myself along with numerous other people would say that Perry-Lecompton is a "farm" school and we are proud of that.It truly amazes me that people on here most of which are adults probably well into their thirties or fourties or fifties (specifically lynchburgsbest who said he has been reading the paper for over 15 years which tells me he is probably in the age ranges just listed and on a sidenote I might add that you NEED to take a spelling class....possibly from Perry?? or do you think the class would be to hard) are forgetting the purpose and meaning behind this article, it is about KIDS people, KIDS that have worked their butts off for the past 3.5 months to make it this far. Perry-Lecompton is barely a 4a school, probably only a couple of years away from being a 3a school and those KIDS are going to the state championship. And finally, Perry-Lecompton football has struggled in the 37 years of existance. The senior class of 2006 started a winning tradition that has carried on over the past two season and now a third. Since the 2005-2006 season they have made it to the first round of the playoffs only to end there. Finally the 2 Paramores (the 2 best coaches in the state) and their assistant coaches are taking an extremely classy, talented, and hardworking team to the most important game of the season.Congratulations Perry-Lecompton, see ya on SaturdayAnd THANK YOU Lawrence-Journal World giving a good group of kids some coverage.

Lulu: "This poor cow needs to be set free to roam the ranges and grasslands without a care in the world"Not a care in the world -- except perhaps that nagging fear that a mountain lion just might be hiding behind every mound of high grass. Come on Lulu, cows aren't exactly at the top of the food chain, even if you take humans out of the equation. While I am convinced that Lulu is just a prankster pulling our leg over the past few years, there are those who have this wonderfully distorted view of the great outdoors as being one big animated cartoon. In China, they are apparently called college students. Did you see the story earlier in the week about the college student who climbed a fence so he could hug a panda bear? Amazingly, the panda, being a BEAR and all, didn't want a hug and it took several bites out of him. What a surprise! http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/11/22/panda.bites.man.china.ap/index.html?iref=mpstoryviewSo the moral of the story is, if you are going to paint an animal to promote the football team, don't paint a living bear, not even the cute ones.
