The director of Kansas University’s police department defended officers who had used mace and billy clubs on students who tore down Memorial Stadium goal posts after Saturday’s KU football victory over Missouri. However, director James Denney said a different method of deterrence should be devised to deal with future events of this nature. “You’ve got to defend yourself and get people off the field,” said Denney. “All officers did an admirable job under the circumstances.”
