San Juan, Puerto Rico Xavier 75, Missouri 71
San Juan, Puerto Rico — Terrell Holloway hit 10-of-10 free throws in the second half as Xavier relinquished a halftime lead and had to rally to beat Missouri Thursday in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
Derrick Brown led Xavier (3-0) with 16 points. Demarre Carroll was 6-of-6 from the field in the second half and finished with 17 points for Missouri (2-1).
Xavier led 35-32 at halftime. A pair of free throws by Carroll gave Missouri a 45-43 lead at 14:10, and although Xavier led by a point twice after that, the Tigers went up by seven on a free throw by Leo Lyons with 7:04 to play.
From that point, Holloway made all 10 free throws, giving the Musketeers the lead for good at 71-70 with 1:21 remaining. His last two came with 4 seconds left.
Oklahoma St. 91, Tulsa 73
Stillwater, Okla. — Three days after getting outrebounded 57-43 by North Texas, Oklahoma State head coach Travis Ford wanted to see a better performance on the boards.
The first-year coach got what he wanted Thursday as his squad used a 39-32 rebounding advantage to overpower Tulsa.
Obi Muonelo pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, James Anderson had eight and Ibrahima Thomas grabbed seven.
An aggressive defense also forced Tulsa (1-1) into 19 turnovers, 16 of those coming in the first half.
“(Rebounding) was much, much better than the last game. We tried to do some things the last couple of days to try and remedy some of those problems,” Ford said. “We had more effort, more attention to detail. We went back and watched film and saw a lot of guys standing and watching rather than reacting.”
Byron Eaton, who led Oklahoma State with a game-high 26 points and had seven assists, said the team did at least a half-dozen rebounding drills over the last couple of days.
“It’s something we have to correct and I thought we rebounded much better (Thursday). (The guards) really have to help out our big men.”
James Anderson and Thomas each added 18 points. Muonelo scored just five, but was part of a 28-rebound effort by the guards.
“Obi sacrificed his scoring for rebounds and defense,” Ford said.
Eaton hit 11-of-14 from the free throw line, leading a 21-for-27 effort by the Cowboys.
The first meeting between the in-state rivals since 1996 turned in Oklahoma State’s favor early, with the Cowboys leading by as many as 28 in building a 54-28 halftime advantage.
Ben Uzoh, who led Tulsa with 20 points and seven rebounds, agreed that the game boiled down to rebounds.
Texas Tech 167, East Central 115
Lubbock, Texas — Trevor Cook scored a career-high 20 points as Texas Tech defeated East Central Thursday night in the Legends Classic.
Cook was one of 10 players in double figures for Texas Tech, which easily eclipsed the record for most points scored by the Red Raiders. Alan Voskuil and John Roberson each had 17 points and Mike Singletary and Wally Dunn each had 16.
Dontae Figgs scored 19 points to lead six East Central players in double figures. Justin Wilkerson scored 17 and Ian Adams added 15 for East Central.
Dunn hit one of his four three-pointers with 7:43 left in the second half to give Tech 130 points, breaking the record of 128 points scored by Texas Tech in a double overtime win against Texas on Feb. 20, 1994.
Texas Tech (3-0) led 77-57 at the half.
East Central (0-1) already scored more than 100 points in two of its exhibition games.
Tech topped 100 points for the first time since Dec. 10, 2005, when it beat Texas-Pan American, 103-50.
The 283 points scored in the game was also the most in school history for the Red Raiders.
