From the Lawrence Daily World for Nov. 21, 1908: “The senior class of the high school today presented the school with a bronze tablet commemorating Abraham Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg speech. … John Collins, the university student who in 1899 was convicted of killing his father, is due to get a pardon from Gov. Hoch before he leaves office. Collins’ sister has worked tirelessly to get her brother freed due to the circumstances that led to the death.”
