K-State rips ESU; Nebraska tops TCU

Kansas State 82, Emporia State 60

Fred Brown and Dominique Sutton scored 14 points apiece to lead Kansas State over Emporia State 82-60 on Wednesday night.

The Wildcats (3-0) also got 11 points from Jamar Samuels and 10 points from Ron Anderson, who pulled in a game-high 10 rebounds.

Robert Moores led Division II Emporia State (1-1) with 12 points. Lamar Wilbern and Adam Holthaus added 10 apiece.

The Hornets took a 14-13 lead midway through the first half on a basket by Wilbern. Kansas State responded late in the period with a 20-4 run, including 11 points by Brown, and led 40-34 at halftime.

In the second half, the Wildcats went on a 13-1 run midway through the period to put the game out of reach with a 69-50 lead.

Kansas State shot just 41 percent from the free-throw line but also pressured the Hornets defensively, forcing 26 Emporia State turnovers.

Nebraska 62, TCU 50

Fort Worth, Texas — Paul Velander came off the bench to score 11 points to help lead Nebraska to victory over TCU.

Nine of Velander’s points came off three-pointers. Toney McCray and Steve Harley each added nine points for the Cornhuskers (2-0).

Nebraska used a 14-3 run in the final five minutes of the first half to take a 37-24 lead at halftime. TCU hit only four of its 21 field-goal attempts in the first half.

TCU (1-3) could get no closer than seven points in the second half.

Kevin Langford scored 19 points for TCU.
