Douglas County Republicans to select new leadership on Sunday

Precinct committee members with the Douglas County Republicans will meet to select a new chairman and other leadership during a reorganizational meeting this weekend.

Craig Campbell, the county party’s chairman for two years, sent a letter recently to precinct committee members informing them that he will not seek another term as chairman because of other commitments.

Campbell, a financial services professional who works in Overland Park, said the county party needs to focus on fundraising and attracting new people, new ideas and leadership to the party in the future.

“You need someone who can actually spend a lot of time that can do that,” he said.

The reorganizational meeting begins at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Lawrence Union Pacific Depot, 402 N. Second St., in North Lawrence. The meeting was originally scheduled to be tonightTuesday, but it was changed because of the Kansas University basketball game.

KU is scheduled to unveil the official 2008 National Championship banner at 7:45 p.m. at Allen Fieldhouse.

“Most of the people wanted it rescheduled, actually,” Campbell said.

In his letter to county Republicans, Campbell mentioned involvement in the presidential caucuses in February and seeing State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins win the 2nd District congressional seat as accomplishments during his tenure.

He said any local Republicans are welcome to attend the meeting or even run for a leadership position. However, only the precinct committee members, who were elected in the August primary, get to vote.
