Old home town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Nov. 18, 1908: A number of local farmers are in favor of eliminating quail huntiing here because of the damage that has been done to their properties and the number of hunters who invade their property without permission. The farmers said there had not been sufficient prosecution of violators so a ban was in order. . . . University officials are calling for people to check ventilation of their living quarters as winter approaches and the prospect of air poisoning is growing. . . . A magnificent $500,000 building to stand as the center of a splendid group of university buildings is the vision of chancellor Frank Strong. He will ask the legislature for at least $125,000 next year for a new single wing of the College of Libral Arts and Sciences. The goal is to have the major building done by the 50th anniversary celebration for the school eight years from now. University enrollment continues to grow at a rate of about 200 students a year and an outstanding central building is needed, Strong says.
