Duke survives Rhode Island, 82-79

Durham, N.C. – Kyle Singler hit two free throws with 19.4 seconds left to help No. 8 Duke rally past Rhode Island, 82-79, on Sunday night.

Jon Scheyer scored 23 points, and Singler finished with 21 points for the Blue Devils (3-0), who fell behind by 12 early and trailed for most of the way.

Singler twice hit a pair of foul shots in the final minute to put the Blue Devils up by one, before Rhode Island called timeout with 10.6 seconds left and worked the ball to Jimmy Baron.

With Singler in his face, his fallaway jumper glanced off the rim, clipped a Rams player and went out of bounds with 4.9 seconds remaining.

No. 6 Michigan St. 100, Idaho 62

East Lansing, Mich. – Chris Allen scored a career-high 21 points, leading the Spartans to a victory over Idaho.

Michigan State’s Raymar Morgan also scored 21 points, Kalin Lucas had 13 points and nine assists, and Goran Suton added 10 points.

No. 9 Notre Dame 94, S.C. Upstate 58

South Bend, Ind. – Luke Harangody had 30 points and 14 rebounds to lead Notre Dame to a season-opening victory over South Carolina-Upstate. It was Harangody’s fourth 30-point game of his career.

Luke Zeller added a career-high 18 points for the Irish.

No. 19 Florida 81, Bradley 58

Gainesville, Fla. – Florida made 14 three-pointers – including a combined nine by forward Dan Werner and guard Walter Hodge – in routing visiting Bradley.

Werner and Hodge each scored 17 points.

“We would have liked to have done a little more in and around the basket, but with the way Bradley played defensively it really opened up for us to shoot the ball,” Florida coach Billy Donovan said. “I think we won the game today because of the three-point line.”

Hodge was 5-of-9, Werner 4-of-6, and sophomore point guard Nick Calathes 3-of-6.

No. 25 Wisconsin 68, Long Beach St. 61

Madison, Wis. – Marcus Landry scored 23 points for Wisconsin, including two big baskets and a pair of important blocks late in the game.
