Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Nov. 16, 1908: There continues to be delirium of excitement among students at the university as a result of the 20-5 Jayhawker football victory over Nebraska the past weekend in Lincoln. A monster bonfire was included in the celebration and when the team came back to town it was escorted in triumph down Massachusetts Street. Top officials spoke, including Gov.-elect W.R. Stubbs and J.D. Bowersock and the school was given a holiday to celebrate. Word from the north is that “Lincoln today is a city of disappointed hopes.” It is estimated that Kansas bettors made as much as $4,000 on the game.
