Of Montreal rocks Liberty Hall, breaks moped

Of Montreal, the Athens, Ga., band that played at Liberty Hall Saturday night, left Lawrence on a sour note.

The band had packed its trailer and loaded its tour bus, which was parked outside the NewsCenter, 645 N.H., and at about 2 a.m. began to pull away towards its next destination, in St. Louis.

The only problem was not everything was buttoned down.

A moped belonging to bassist Davey Pierce was trapped beneath the trailer, sending sparks flying as the bus turned onto Seventh Street.

When the bus driver realized something was slowing the band's exit from Lawrence, he pulled over, and band members spilled out of the tour bus. Pierce let loose a series of expletives when he saw the battered remains of his moped.

At least he can still ride in the tour bus, which is presumably better suited for ferrying rock stars than the destroyed two-wheeler.

Here's a photo of what may have been the ill-fated moped.

It wasn't the one pictured in the photo. The scooter in question was red. I saw it when the band's bus/trailer was parked on New Hampshire. At that point, the scooter was parked between the bus and the trailer, and I remember thinking, "Wow, what a particularly $hitty place to park a scooter." I realize it may have been teathered there or something to prevent theft, but still....

Indeed, that is not the photo of the "ill-fated" moped. The actual photos are here:http://www.mopedarmy.com/forums/discuss/1/607620/607620/Nice to see some of you all being so ... sympathetic... Hopefully none of you ever suffer the misfortune of having something you care about damaged.

As an avid moped/scooter enthusiast, and the founder of KU's former Scooter Club "The Scooterhawks," I'd like to express my condolences for Pierce's loss. Also, as someone who's been hit by a car while riding a scooter, I would ALSO like to express my gratitude that no one was hurt.

Nice article make fun of someone's loss. Ever think how handy a moped would be when you're riding around the country in a tour bus? I thought not!

I guess that the bus driver failed to do his pre-trip safety inspection? The first rule of order is to visually inspect all sides and UNDER the bus for puddles, illegal Canadians, mopeds, and debri, and do the same with the hitch and the trailer's undercarraige. The bus driver is 100% at fault and is liable for damage and injuries that may have resulted from his negligence.

witchfindergeneral (Anonymous) says:'Alternative title for this article: "Hipster Band Loses Trademark Hipster Ride"'The whole incident seems strangely poetic...

The moped looked like it was on its last leg already.
