Palo Alto, Calif. ? Katie Williams and Shannon McCabe scored first-half goals, and the Kansas University soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Denver on Friday at Cagan Stadium on the campus of Stanford University.

The Jayhawks earned their first NCAA Tournament victory since 2004.

Kansas (13-7-2) will meet No. 1 seed Stanford at 3 p.m. Sunday at Cagan Stadium.

In the 13th minute, Williams, a sophomore, gave the Jayhawks a 1-0 lead. It was Williams’ third goal of the season and Monica Dolinsky’s 10th assist, tying the school record for most assists by a junior.

“I thought we were a little nervous in the first 20 minutes, but we settled down after the goal,” KU coach Mark Francis said. “In the second half, I thought we did a better job of competing. But it’s great to get the win, and now we get to keep playing. In the NCAA Tournament, anything can happen, so we need to be ready to go on Sunday.”

The Jayhawks took a 2-0 lead just before the halftime break. McCabe, a junior, scored her ninth goal of the year with a low drive to the far corner of the net from 18 yards out. Senior Missy Geha found McCabe along the far sideline.

“I just took a chance and went at (the defender), because there wasn’t much time left in the half, and it paid off,” McCabe said. “I went into the game with the mentality of trying to make something happen and trying to take some chances.”

The Pioneers (19-3-2) cut the lead to 2-1 in the 48th minute as Taryn Hemmings finished a set play on the far side of the box. DU’s leading goal-scorer put a head on a free kick from Jessi Keller just outside the box.

Kansas goalkeeper Julie Hanley made four saves to earn her first career NCAA Tournament victory. She is the second Jayhawk keeper to win an NCAA Tournament match. Meghan Miller earned all three of the team’s previous victories.

Kansas outshot the Pioneers, 19-13. McCabe and Geha led the KU attack with four shots each, while Dolinsky and Jessica Bush chipped in three apiece.
